Why Do We Dance? A Song by Inge and Derk
Sometimes you hear a song that says exactly why you do what you do.
For us, that was the music of Inge (Ivy) and Derk de Geus, from their album Why We Dance. Inge is a well-known face in the Nijmegen dance community, and we love the way she dances. Together with Derk she made a song that asks the question we keep coming back to: why do we dance at all?
What the song says
This is how we hear it:
- Your body knows the way. When your mind gets stuck, let your body take over. It often knows better than you what you need.
- Movement is a prayer. Dancing is more than a night out or a workout. It is a way to come back to what is real.
- Sweating together, feeling together. Laughter, tears, doubt and hope: everything is allowed to move, and you don’t have to do it alone.
Why it fits ecstatic dance so well
At Ecstatic Oracle Dance we dance barefoot, without steps and without talking on the dance floor. No audience, one field. This song puts into words what we experience there: you let your mind go quiet for a moment, and your body tells you the rest.
